It’s like encountering a face from the past… like seeing artwork from ancient Americas, ooh, like the Mayans! Hmm… maybe the past is never really over? Maybe it just keeps coming back and reappearing in new forms. So maybe what only seems unfamiliar is only because we’ve forgot our histories…

What is Janis? Friend or Foe?
So we have all had that experience: we are going about our business – walking down the street, picking something up at the store – when suddenly someone catches our eye. We pause to look. What or rather who have we encountered? Maybe the person we see is striking? Maybe a possible threat? Maybe the person is just different, strange – someone seemingly out of place with where you are, or maybe, with who you know? Ok, but maybe they are just a stranger – they only seem strange, because that person is just someone we don’t know – yet?
Maybe you had these reactions when meeting Janis on the street. This inflatable double-sided head by artist Frank Hyder offers you an opportunity to engage with someone who you are most certainly not familiar. Take the time to look at both sides of Janis. Janis presents you with two faces, two points of view. What does it mean to be face-to-face with someone/something different than ourselves?
Tell us who or what you find strange or familiar. Was/Is there someone else who just doesn’t seem to understand you – when you were the stranger? Do you want to share your side of the story?
