Frank Hyder: The Janis Project
November 10, 2018 – February 23, 2019
“Inspired by the Moai of Easter Island, the Olmec heads, and the ancient Roman god of new endeavors, Frank Hyder’s The Janis Project is a multimedia experience that has traveled the world, defying traditional modes of exhibition and encouraging dialogue about art in public spaces. Each sculpture, made with resilient nylon and paint, has two faces with two distinct skin colors and a unique adornment of face paint. The figures carry with them a message of unity and ask the public to consider the issues that often divide us as human. Hyder’s Janis Heads travel to the Michener this fall and will be on view alongside a selection of watercolors made during his journey around the world with his sculptures.” Louise Feder, Guest Curator

Frank Hyder: Janis Journey
November 15-December 15, 2018
“The human face has been a primary focus of much of Hyder’s past and present work. Hyder assimilates and repurposes materials as part of his process. He continually finds meaning and emotional content by exploring materials and working through process at his modus operandi to create his work.
His extensive travel and interest in native cultures in South America, South Pacific, French Polynesia, and Easter Island have inspired his pictorial language. Roman mythology is where the concept of Janis’s Journey comes from.” Denise Bibro Gallery press release October 15, 2018
This solo exhibition featured bronze sculpture, acrylic paintings and watercolors.
